CHRISTOPHER JAMES-TURLEY
Silver Gelatine Artist
Christopher is a Nottinghamshire-based artist who works with traditional photographic printing techniques to create unique, abstract works. Through a process he developed, he scorches glass slides in various ways, which serve in place of traditional negatives in darkroom printing. The resulting silver gelatine artworks unfold as landscapes of tone and acute detail, inviting the viewer to find their own psychological reflections woven into an echo of ignition.
His work adopts a holistic perspective as an antidote to an overstimulating and chaotic world, celebrating the value of slow processes and the beauty and nuance of the handmade. Exploring themes of mental, sociological, and spiritual relationships in time and space, his practice sets the precision of hand printing against the unpredictability of fire and chaos, reflecting the balance of everyday life.
This harmony carries a timeless, meditative quality, encouraging the viewer to pause and explore the subtleties of each piece, which balances deliberate composition with the serendipity of process to create a minimal yet organic aesthetic.
